PLATOON 2 RESPONDS TO MVA WITH EXTRICATION AT THAMES SQUARE

Sunday morning August 29, 2010, at around 8:00 a.m., Norwich Fire Department Engine 3 and Squad A responded to the intersection of North Thames Street and West Main Street for a two car motor vehicle accident with injuries.  Upon arrival extrication was needed.  Extrication was successfully completed by the Squad and Engine 3 crews and all three occupants were transported by American Ambulance to W. W. Backus Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

PLATOON 3 HANDLES SMALL FIRE ON LAUREL HILL AVENUE

Platoon 3 responded to 285 Laurel Hill Avenue around 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening, August 24, 2010, for a reported structure fire.  Crews found and contained a small fire in the basement.  No injuries were reported and the fire was contained in about fifteen minutes.

RECENT PROMOTIONS TO FIRE LIEUTENANT AND CAPTAIN

A swearing in ceremony was held by Chief Kenneth Scandariato Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Norwich Fire Headquarters.  Fire Lieutenant Scott Merchant was promoted to Fire Captain and Firefighter Nathan Kannas was promoted to Fire Lieutenant.  Captain Merchant has been a Norwich firefighter for 12 years and Lieutenant Kannas for 9 years.  Family, friends, fellow Norwich Firefighters, and city leaders attended the gathering.  Captain Merchant will be assigned to Platoon 1 and Lieutenant Kannas to Platoon 4.  Good luck to both in their continued service to the department.  

PLATOON 1 HANDLES SMALL FIRE ON ONECO STREET

Platoon 1 responded to 44 Oneco Street for a reported structure fire early Tuesday morning, August 17, 2010.  Norwich Firefighters found and contained a fire to a second floor bedroom.  No injuries were reported.  Firefighters were assisted by the Mohegan Tribal FAST.

LOCAL 892 MEMBERS PARTICIPATE IN RED SHIRT FRIDAYS TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR OUR SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN

Members of Norwich Firefighters Local 892 recently began participating in the national "Red Shirt Friday" program.  In doing so, Local 892 members will be wearing red shirts to show solidarity in support of those servicemen and women serving in our armed forces both domestically and abroad. 

Funds collected by Local 892 members on behalf of this program are being donated to a local United States Marine Detachment in Connecticut.

  NORWICH FIREFIGHTERS LOCAL 892 AGREES TO CONCESSIONS WITH THE CITY

Norwich Firefighters Local 892 has agreed to concessions with the City of Norwich due to expected budget shortfalls for the upcoming 2010-2011 budget year.  Members agreed to give back their annual emergency medical technician stipends and uniform allowance.  As a reult, the collective bargaining agreement was extended one year from 2012-2013.  The union further agreed to negotiate wages for the final year of their contract.  These savings amount to over $55,000 in savings to the City.
